I Am Afraid

We were not in the city, but in the country,
And it was day, but it was not clear day.
A grey mist hid the sun.
The trees were lost, and so were the houses.
There was no sound, save the dripping of water.
And the rain, which had been falling all night, had started to fall again.
It was a dismal day.
I had been in the country, but it was my first time, and I had been told by many to expect beauty.
But I saw no beauty here.
At the end of the road, there was a fence, and beyond it, a wood, which was dark and forbidding.
And there was a gate, which was rusty and old.
And I had been told to pass through it, and to go to the house beyond.
But I could not bring myself to do it then, for I was afraid.
I have been afraid all my life.
I have been afraid of the dark, and of the night, and of the silence.
I have been afraid of the wind, and of the storm, and of the rain.
I have been afraid of the sun, and of the moon, and of the stars.
I have been afraid of the rivers, and of the lakes, and of the seas.
I have been afraid of the mountains, and of the hills, and of the valleys.
I have been afraid of the fields, and of the woods, and of the desert.
I have been afraid of the cities, and of the towns, and of the villages.
I have been afraid of the people, and of the animals, and of the plants.
I have been afraid of the world, and of the universe, and of the eternity.
But I am more afraid now than I have ever been.
For I am alone, and I am lost, and I am weak.
And I do not know where to go, or what to do.
And I do not know who I am, or what I am.
And I do not know why I am.
I am afraid, and I am alone, and I am lost.
And I do not know where to go, or what to do.
And I do not know who I am, or what I am.
And I do not know why I am.
I am afraid, and I am alone, and I am lost.
And I do not know where to go, or what to do.
And I do not know who I am, or what I am.
And I do not know why I am.
